Unspoilt & picturesque, Shaldon is a characterful seaside village which sits opposite the Victorian seaside town of Teignmouth on the River Teign in South Devon, and is home to a number of our self-catering holiday cottages. Everything you need is within walking distance in Shaldon and there is a good selection of local shops such as a post office, pharmacy, bakers (with newspapers & magazines), the general Village Store, a local butcher & green grocer as well as 5 pubs, many restaurants & cafés in both Shaldon and across the river in Teignmouth. Leave your car parked on dry days and take the passenger ferry instead from Shaldon Beach, operating 364 days of the year, weather permitting!
On your door step, there are some really fun attractions you can visit ~ such as Shaldon Zoo, Homeyards Botanical Gardens, the new Nature Reserve at Labrador Bay or walking a section of the beautiful South West Coastal Path. For those of you who really enjoy walking, there are plenty of free downloadable walks from John Harris’ Walking in Devon (Walk Labrador Bay & Templer Way). Or you can just sunbathe or build sandcastles on either Shaldon Beach or the secluded beach at Ness Cove Beach. This is accessed via the original Smugglers Tunnel through the hillside opposite the Ness Car Park down the driveway behind Ode Café. For a truly picturesque golf game over 18 holes; why not hire some clubs and play a round of golf at the Shaldon Approach Golf Course; considered to be one of the best approach courses in the South West. No worries about dress code, nor any need for golf shoes! So there really is no shortage of things to see & do!

From yummy fresh seafood and Victorian seaside fun, to breath-taking coastal paths, ferry trips and steam railways all showcased for you in an area of outstanding natural beauty, and perfectly placed on the doorstep of Dartmoor, Exeter and Plymouth; Teignmouth provides everything you need for a Great British seaside holiday! This picturesque town has been a holiday favourite since Georgian times. Its appeal today still lies in traditional seaside fun – paddling on the town’s beach, playing the arcades on the Grand Pier and taking England’s oldest passenger ferry across the estuary to neighbouring Shaldon. But in recent years it has also gained a reputation as a foodie hotspot. This year will see the third Teignmouth food festival and the summer launch of a new self-guided Taste of the Teign food trail further cements its status as a destination for gourmets. The trail will take in Old Walls vineyard, Red Rock Brewery, Milltop Orchards, and local places to eat such as the Crab Shack, which brings in fresh seafood every day on its own boats.
But it’s a different sort of boat that will put Teignmouth in the spotlight in 2017. The Mercy, starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz and due for release early this year, tells the story of Donald Crowhurst, a yachtsman who sent false reports of his location to dupe people into believing he was circumnavigating the globe. Crowhurst’s over-ambitious attempt ended in tragedy but the film, shot in Teignmouth – where Crowhurst’s journey began – should be a boon for the town, drawing attention to a stretch of coast often by-passsed by holidaymakers making a beeline for Torquay and beyond.
