Reached through a stone gateway and up a private sloping road, this fine example of period splendour sits in pristine and idyllic landscaped grounds which fully enhance further this family-friendly pleasure house.
Dating back to 1910 and built by a local wealthy fishing fleet owner Charles Hellier; the house boasts the highest quality materials and finished throughout, was designed and built by only the best craftsman of the day. These splendid original features which include the decorative plaster work, high ceilings, solid oak panelling and large period windows have all been beautifully maintained throughout time and today, ensure guests can fully enjoy the perfect balance of modern contemporary living, with the charm and elegance of a superbly kept fine period home.
On reaching the beautiful entrance of Wolborough House, guests are welcomed into a splendid hallway which conveys a fine hunting lodge décor. A stag’s head and other period antiquities as well as beautifully preserved solid oak panelling and a fine oak staircase, lead to the upper floors under a chandelier lit procession and naturally lit by a breath-taking stained glass window.
The house can comfortably accommodate a party of up to 16, making for the ideal venue for large family celebrations and anniversaries.
The house boasts bright and generously proportioned rooms for entertaining. The principal drawing room is furnished to a high standard with comfortable seating and provides a plasma TV and DVD player for guest’s entertainment. Wi-Fi access is also available for guest’s use during their stay. This graceful and relaxing sitting room has impressive Edwardian windows looking out onto the Brixham Breakwater and enjoys spectacular 180° sea views, making it the perfect place to entertain in style.
A grand oak panelled dining room provides the ideal family party venue with a fine 16-place dining table furnished with comfortable leather chairs and accompanied by sea views over Brixham harbour. It also boasts the opportunity to enjoy the splendid ambience of a roaring fire from the room’s splendid original stone hearth.
The epitome of a luxury self-catering stay is the quality of the kitchen and in Wolborough house guests will not be disappointed! The house boasts a fabulous fully fitted country-style kitchen with its sunny and glorious aspect overlooking the coast with modern yet sympathetic style to bring a touch of understated elegance and comfort to morning breakfasts.
A full range electric cooker, all the desired modern appliances and a separate preparation area provides the perfect excuse to cook or hire help and enjoy delicious meals during your stay! A breakfast table also features to the principal kitchen and guests can enjoy a relaxed sunny morning coffee here together.
In addition to the two indoor dining areas of the house, guests can further enjoy ‘alfresco dining’ in the beautiful sea view grounds during the spring and summer months, with a splendid outdoor terrace area and BBQ to make the most of the idyllic and romantic coastal setting.
On a relaxing day-in, guests will be never be bored with an impressive range of modern day activities provided in the sumptuous comfort of this period mansion.
A full size snooker room can be enjoyed just off the entrance hall and enjoys beautiful sea views to provide the perfect backdrop to an afternoon game or two. The purpose-built ‘fun floor’ is situated on the lower ground floor where guests can unwind in the large games area complete a bar area, table tennis, a lovely play room for children complete with chalkboard wall, a well-equipped modern gym and also an impressive indoor heated swimming pool for swimming and simply enjoying!
From the grand main entrance hallway the fine wide oak staircase leads up to a bright gallery landing leading to two corridors of sumptuous sleeping accommodation in the form of 6 double bedrooms and 2 twin bedrooms, 1 luxury en-suite bathroom and two principal luxury family bathrooms each fitted with an Edwardian style bath tub and one with a shower also.
Each bedroom has been furnished to an exceptionally high standard with beautiful antique furnishings, luxury beds, sumptuous carpets and breath-taking sea views to 6 of the double bedrooms!
The generously proportioned master bedroom suite enjoys direct sea views and features high ceilings with decorative plasterwork and delicate chandelier, fine splendid panelled wall details and fireplace completed with fine French-style solid wood bed, bedside tables and large wardrobes to match. The luxury en-suite bathroom with large oval bath with shower overhead, adds to the bedroom’s luxurious comfort.
A second bedroom is ideal for up to four guests with two twin double beds provided in a bright and spacious sea facing room with charming feature fireplace. A third bedroom is furnished with two comfortable single beds for two guests with lovely high ceilings, feature fireplace and picturesque garden views from its sunny balcony. A fourth bedroom also provides twin single beds for up to two guests and is decorated in a romantic berry hue with dramatic sea views to enjoy.
A second couple can enjoy the spacious fifth double bedroom which is furnished with a beautiful double bed in a sunny and welcoming room which enjoys a lovely aspect and fine period details including its marble fireplace.
A third couple will adore the sixth pretty bedroom which enjoys a pretty English garden style in a soft pink palette with chrome double bed, ornate fireplace and charming views across the beautiful grounds & Brixham harbour.
The seventh bedroom with sea views is ideal for a fourth couple staying with a stylish and tasteful interior complemented by its comfortable double bed, solid wood furniture and fine iron fireplace and surround.
The eighth bedroom on the lower ground floor next to the games & entertainment area provides a sunny and spacious contemporary finish perfect for a fifth couple with a lovely double bed and plenty of room to relax and unwind in. There is a large double shower & toilet next door together with a large sauna.
The beautiful landscaped grounds of Wolborough House provide the ideal way to spend a leisurely afternoon with fine sea view lawns and verandas with matures trees to frame the picturesque Brixham harbour below.
The lower ground floor apartment is the private dwelling of the helpful and welcoming House Keepers who have full knowledge of the house and its features and are there if you need help during your self-catering stay.
From its picturesque setting, guests are within easy reach of the pretty chalky beach below known as Breakwater Beach and also the charming shops, tearooms and impressive fish market which front the pretty seaside harbour town of Brixham. Berry Head to Sharkham Point, a National Nature Reserve, is a haven for wildlife. Berry Head is also the site for the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. The former artillery house now houses a public display.
The vibrant seaside town of Torquay with its wide selection of restaurants, bars, shopping arcades and lively nightlife is just over a 25 minutes’ drive away and picturesque Paignton with its family-friendly Zoo and fine golf courses is just under a 15 minutes’ drive away.
For those wanting to enjoy a full breadth of outdoor activities, the Dartmoor National Park and 41 National Trust homes & gardens to visit, are all within easy reach by car.
Visitors to Devon arrive through a combination of road, rail, sea and air. Brixham is highly accessible by car being close to the M5 & A380.
The Paignton, Torquay & Newton Abbot mainline train stations are very close by and the close proximity of Exeter airport makes it more or less effortless to arrive and be sure of a fabulous and ever memorable Devon stay!

Rental Notes & Short Breaks
Arrival Day
The preferred check-in day is Saturday.
Arrival is from 4pm onwards and departure is by 10am.
We offer 3 nights minimum all year round with the exception of July & August where 7 nights is preferred.
Short breaks are calculated at:
3 nights is 60% of the weekly tariff.
4 nights is 70% of the weekly tariff.
5 nights is 80% of the weekly tariff.
6 nights is 90% of the weekly tariff.
Cleaning, Linen & Towels
All linen and towels are included with each rental. Linen & towels are changed weekly.
Infant cots are also available on request.
Making a Booking
To make a confirmed booking, you will be asked to fill in our online booking form and pay a 30% deposit by credit card or wire transfer. The remaining holiday balance will then be due 6 weeks before arrival.
Wolborough House is the perfect setting for Birthday Celebrations, Anniversaries and Family Get-togethers. However, we are unable to accommodate Wedding Guests or Hen & Stag Parties.
