March 2013

We have both had an amazing weekend staying at Kilmorie Lodge. The Studio is truly wonderful and exceeded our expectations.

It was warm, comfortable & had everything (if not more) than we needed. We particularly enjoyed a home-made Cappuccino from the coffee machine, whilst looking out at the beautiful sea views.

The bed is better than our one at home, very comfortable!

The Studio is in a perfect location, with lots to do in the area. Wish we didn't have to leave.

Thank you very much Robin for providing us the opportunity to stay here, we hope to come back in the near future!

Oh and the Saffron Restaurant you recommended made us the best curries we have had in a long time!!

We were also very fortunate to have the sun shining, considering it was snowing in Essex when we left!

Interesting Fact or Question?

Kilmorie Studio sits at the bottom of Ilsham Marine Drive in Torquay (probably the most exclusive road in the town) overlooks Meadfoot Beach. Meadfoot is one of Torquay's many beaches and, while the limestone around the beaches was formed 370 to 390 million years ago, the beaches themselves were created much much later than that. In fact, they're the babies of Torquay's coastline! The bay and beaches came about when the last ice age ended around 10,000 years ago.

Tourism is the resort's main industry - and the beaches play a big part in the town's economy.

The resort started to develop during the 19th Century, when Torquay was seen as an exclusive place for people to visit. Grand villas were built on the hillsides, and they're still dotted along Ilsham Valley.

As you head up the valley from Meadfoot Beach, you walk through a woodland which was planted by the wealthy Victorian landowners, who loved their trees. This bit is uphill, until you reach the prehistoric caves at Kents Cavern.

Kents Cavern is one of the most important Palaeolithic cave systems in Europe. It's a scheduled ancient monument and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The Devonian limestone which forms the walls of the caves started its life around 370 million years ago, when Torbay was under the sea, some 3,500 miles away and south of the Equator. The caves themselves were probably initially formed 2.5 million years ago - and they're still changing to this day. Because of the way the caves developed, they trapped and preserved some of the most historic remains of man and beast ever found in Europe.
