This bold energetic city, with its pleasant weather, sunny coasts and its stunning scenic beauty is considered to be one of the most enchanting destinations of the Mediterranean.
This south coast city is the island's largest seaside resort close to the foothills of the Troodos Mountains and has seen its fair share of invaders and history makers. The finds from archaeological digs have established the fact that the Romans breathed life into Cypriot culture since ancient times and gods such as Apollo, originated there about 1200 years ago, from the 8th century B.C to 4th century A.D.
The ‘Middle Ages’ saw the Crusaders visit Cyprus under the command of Richard the Lionheart, where he was purported to have married Queen Berengaria of Navarre in 1191, at Limassol Castle and crowned her Queen of England. As a rich trading post Limassol has been known for its wine and sugar cane for hundreds of years which continue to this very day. Wine tours can be organized and are well worth the day out!
Once known as Neapolis (new town), Limassol was built between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, where you can see Cyprus' rich, diverse history and its traditional culture. You can immerse yourself in its epic past or experience its present metropolis feel. Now with a trendy and modern way of life, Limassol is a city for those who want history by day, excitement by night with some cosmopolitan culture and shopping thrown in. Limassol offers the full complement of shopping from ultra-modern to traditional and handmade. In other parts of the island and in quiet back streets, shoes and clothes can be made to measure in a matter of days. St. Andrews Street is not far from the seafront promenade and makes for a fascinating trip with its quaint buildings and overhanging terraces, under which a range of small shops provide all manner of local products and services.
Concentrated chiefly on the eastern side of Limassol, there are wide range Taverna’s pubs, discos and nightclubs. There are also numerous beaches to choose from, some very popular during midsummer with the convenience of changing rooms, showers, cafés and bars, and there are others quite uncrowded, particularly those on the outskirts of town, such as the sandy beach known as ‘Ladies Mile', west of the new harbour.
Limassol also has an attractive, newly-completed and now being extended marina equipped with every facility for the keen yachtsman.
