Devon is awash with famous towns and villages inhabited by famous people over the centuries. You will recognise many such as Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Francis Drake, Agatha Christie, Charles Darwin and more recently Joss stone and Tom Daley! Devon (from a Celtic word; ‘Dumnonii’ thought to mean ‘deep valley dwellers’) is also home to ancient dwellings and the first recorded human habitation in the UK (Kent’s Cavern). Devon is the also the second largest county, has a large number of areas of outstanding natural beauty, a high number of National Trust centres, two well-known cities in Exeter and Plymouth, Dartmoor and Exmoor for the adventurous and a large number of popular holiday destinations.
Depending on what type of cottage break you are after will determine the town. Perhaps you wish to visit the seaside and soak up the salt air or wish to explore the rich Devon countryside. Many of these Devon towns are frequented year on year by many people who return to introduce their own children to places where they had many of their own holiday experiences and developed fond memories of Devon.
You may well recognise many of these and have your own favourites, but here are a few that are better known: Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Budleigh Salterton, Clovelly, Dartmouth, Dawlish, Exmouth, Holsworthy, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Lynton, Newton Abbot, Okehampton, Paignton, Salcombe, Shaldon, Sidmouth, Tavistock, Teignmouth, Tiverton, Torquay and Totnes.
There is a wealth of villages scattered throughout Devon however and it is many of these that attract the self-caterer. A couple of our favourites are East Prawle and Prawle Point and Colmer Estate at California Cross. Of the main holiday resorts, such as Torbay (Torquay, Paignton and Brixham) there are wonderful hidden gems, such as Hesketh Crescent overlooking Meadfoot beach, Seascape overlooking the outer harbour and breakwater in Brixham and a little further away the famous beach huts at Shaldon! Places such as Torquay are popular as a Devon centre for exploring on days out, but still having a wealth of local activities. For example Dartmoor is 30 minutes away by car, Dartmouth is 40 minutes by ferry, Shaldon and Teignmouth, 15 minutes by car, but the world famous Paignton Zoo, Kents Cavern and Living Coasts are on the doorstep. The south West coastal path runs through Devon and offers walkers and hikers a more "in-touch" way of seeing the Devon coast. Staying in a Devon holiday homes on the coast is often a choice for those who like to bring their dogs and walking boots!
99% of all the towns in Devon have been established for hundreds of years many dating back over a thousand. Way before Devon was seen as a holiday destination and people travelled hundreds, even thousands of miles to spend time away, Devon towns were based on various manual industries, such as agriculture and fishing. As the centuries passed other industries developed such as mining and as the travel networks opened up, tourism. Devon is now recognised as a major holiday destination, but the heritage of the centuries can still be enjoyed at ancient fishing ports, in hidden villages, farming landscapes and through the ancient legends that come through a long history of human habitation and endeavour.
